"אני בן 53 אבל אני אומר לכולם שאני בן 45. את שמונה השנים החסרות השארתי על רצפת בית הכלא 'טורה' הידוע לשמצה בקהיר, שם נאסרתי בעקבות האשמות כוזבות בריגול למען ישראל.
אחד הדברים הקשים במהלך השהות בכלא היה היחס הלא אנושי לו זכיתי מהסוהרים. הרגשתי שאני נופל נפילה חופשית ללא מצנח. מה שעזר לי לשמור על שפיותי הייתה הידיעה שמדינת ישראל לעולם לא תנטוש אותי, למרות שאני לא יהודי, הודות למצוות 'פדיון שבויים'".
מה היה הזיכרון הקשה ביותר שלך מהכלא?
"היה לי חבר שנגזר עליו גזר דין מוות. ביום של ההוצאה להורג הוא ביקש להגיע לתאי ולהיפרד. הוא הסתכל עלי דרך הסורגים ואמר לי: 'אני לא אראה את משפחתי יותר לעולם אבל אני יודע שאתה כן. הלוואי והייתי ישראלי'".

”I’m 53 years old but I tell everyone I’m 45. The 8 missing years I left on the floor of the notorious Tora prison in Cairo. I was charged with espionage for Israel, but the charges were bogus.
One of the hardest things in prison was the unhuman treatment I got from the guards. You are free falling down the rabbit hole and there is no parachute. One of the things that helped me keep my sanity was that I knew Israel would never abandon me, even though I’m Druze. This is thanks to a religious duty in Judaism to bring about the release of a fellow Jew captured or imprisoned unjustly by the authorities".
What was the hardest memory you have from prison?
“I had an Egyptian prisoner friend who was convicted to death. On the morning of the sentencing, he asked to come and say goodbye. He looked at me through the bars and said: 'I will never see my family again, but I know you will. I wish I had been Israeli".
